What We Do

UMBC Student Marshals are part-time security employees of the University of Maryland Police. Student Marshals are not sworn officers and as such do not have powers of arrest or carry weapons. The most basic purpose of a Student Marshal is to act as the eyes and ears of the UMBC Police Department, presenting a law enforcement presence on campus and performing security duties while observing and reporting dangerous conditions and unsafe or illegal actions.

Student Marshals accomplish the following security duties:
  • Locking/Unlocking all academic buildings every weekday morning and night.
  • Performing security escorts in the evening hours, Sunday through Thursday, walking with pedestrians when they feel walking alone may be unsafe. In between escorts, Student Marshals often patrol campus on foot, maintaining vigilance and visibility.
  • Providing routine traffic control to ease the flow of campus traffic, as well as special event traffic control for major campus events.
  • Providing security for nearly all UMBC campus events. This includes ensuring door security, monitoring and prohibiting entrance of weapons and illegal substances to events, and ensuring general personal security and property safety for the University, event hosts, and guests alike.
Student Marshals, as Department employees, work closely with UMBC Police Officers, both in general assistance to the Department and especially in providing event security. Being students and often found walking around campus both on and off the job, they also offer a 'street face' for the Department, potentially giving students a more accessible means of voicing their questions or concerns than flagging down a police car.

Who We Are

The UMBC Police Department budgets for 13 Student Marshals and a Student Marshal Supervisor. The Student Marshals Service, through the Supervisor, works directly for the UMBC Police Programs Management Specialist. The current Supervisor is SMS Harold Taylor.

Our History

The UMBC Student Marshals Service was created  to both make the Department more versatile and accessible and to offer students an on-campus job working with the Department. Since the program's inception, Student Marshals have not only become an integral part of UMBC's security operations, they have also become a stepping stone for future Law Enforcement Officers, some of whom have even returned to serve the UMBC community.
